12-year-old boy accidentally shoots and kills turkey in Moore County
It happened around 8pm on Cummings Road just outside Robbins.
The Moore County Sheriff’s Office said someone dropped a handgun at the turkey shooting. That gun wounded a mother, father and two children.
The most severe injury was with a 12-year-old child. Their injuries were not life-threatening, but they had to be airlifted to Chapel Hill for treatment.
Another woman is said to have fallen into the fire pit after the gun went off. She is injured but will recover.
The Moore County Sheriff’s Office reported that it will likely release the names of the adult victims on Monday.
The incident has raised alarms about gun safety across central North Carolina.
Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone said he shot turkeys many times while growing up.
They are often fundraisers that can benefit the community, he said, but that everyone involved must take gun safety seriously.
“It’s like driving a car, you have to think about it: It’s a deadly weapon,” says Stone.
