16% of Waterloo Area residents ages 5-11 have been vaccinated against COVID-19

Waterloo Public Health reported on Thursday that 16.06 percent of area residents ages five to 11 have now received a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

As the agency said recently, there are 48,000 children of that age in the region, which means more than 7,500 children were vaccinated in the first five days of being given out.

Overall, Waterloo Public Health says 454,521 residents are now fully vaccinated, 245 more than reported Wednesday. This corresponds to 75.1% of the region’s population.

There have been 932,020 vaccinations carried out in the region so far, 2,759 more than reported 24 hours earlier.

On the other end of the spectrum, Waterloo Public Health reported that another 31 people tested positive for coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases in the region to 20,994 cases.

This brings the daily seven-day average of new cases to 30.

There was also a new COVID-19-related death reported Thursday, bringing the death toll in the region to 308.

“Today we report a death in our community related to COVID-19,” said Health Officer Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang.

Another 29 people have also been cleared of the virus, bringing the total number of cases resolved in the region to 20,445.

This leaves the region with 239 active COVID-19 cases, more than one was announced on Wednesday and more than eight were reported last week.

There are also 11 people in area hospitals as a result of COVID-19, of which six are in intensive care.
