How do you feel most confident? What are a few things you would like to do to boost your self-confidence if you don’t feel 100%?
I rely heavily on my Christian faith, so even when I don’t feel most confident, I have to remind myself of what the Word says about myself and my identity. Outwardly, I feel most confident when I’m well-rested. I know that I am the best version of myself when my tank is full. I also feel confident being able to wake up to a successful curl with defined curls. I am switching to my natural hair, and some days, it will work!
On days when I don’t feel 100% healthy, it’s imperative that I take time out for myself to do something that brings me joy and hope to turn my day around, which sometimes means taking care of myself. self-dating or FaceTiming with his family. talk or simply go jogging with my dog.
Have you ever not appreciated your skin or felt undervalued by those around you? If so, how did you get through this?
Honestly, I struggled with my identity from my youth until my mid-20s. I come from a family of many skin tones and shades (all Black and all beautiful), but it could be argued that I am one of the gentlest people in my immediate family. That being said, it comes with a lot of ridicule and questions. People always have something to say about my looks, and I get teased a lot. I ended up internalizing their doubts about myself. I used to really dislike myself, and it took a lot of self-reflection and prayer to push those negative thoughts away and learn to embrace what makes me unique.
Which self-care products do you enjoy using the most and why do you love each of them?
I am completely obsessed with skin care products. I am constantly searching the market for the latest products. While I understand the journey to perfect skin is a long one, I really appreciate the quick fixes of the mask. I will use the mask. Whether it’s a sheet mask, an overnight mask, or a thick clay mask, I have it all. There are many options out there that target every skin concern. I feel productive when I can cook a meal, clean the apartment, or answer some emails while taking care of my skin. Instant results are always gratifying, although they don’t always last long. I recently turned 30, so I want to make sure I’m taking the best care of my skin and sticking to my regimen.
What are some staples you always carry in your kit?
My staples include under-eye lightening creams. Sometimes, concealer is not suitable if the skin underneath is properly moisturized. I like a dewy glow, so I always carry Kevyn Aucoin Glass Glow Face and Body Gloss on hand. This product is non-sticky and adheres beautifully to the skin. I also love Bobbi Brown’s Nude Finish Illuminating Pressed Powder — it comes in five shades. I don’t always use them how they are meant to be used. Sometimes, I’ll use them as bronzers, or I’ll blend this into the crease of my eyes for extra dimension.
What is your all-time favorite beauty brand for black and brown skin?
I fell in love with Ami Cole. I’m excited to see this brand expand in the market and hopefully on Ulta or Sephora shelves! I also really appreciate Kosas. I’ve been using cleaner beauty in my kit, and the brand doesn’t disappoint! Its concealers are amazing and they come in so many shades — that’s why they’re always out of stock!
How are you celebrating Black History Month?
History is being made in the Black community every day. I just wish it was more publicly acknowledged and acknowledged. I want to continue working with Black ads in my industry. I think it’s really important that we control our image across all aspects of our media. In my sphere of influence, I want to continue to raise awareness for other Black ads and give us more room.
