2 children hospitalized after car crashed into Chapel Hill playground outside Northside elementary school
Two children playing on the playground were injured and taken to UNC Hospital. The driver was also taken to UNC for treatment.
Their conditions were not immediately known.
The shipwreck happened around 4 p.m. when the vehicle plowed through a fence and hit playground equipment. There were 20 children on the playground at the time of the accident.
Another child was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Chapel Hill Police Crisis Advisors are assisting the families involved.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools told ABC11 that all children on the playground participate in the Community School After School Program. Students ranged in age from 5 to 9. It was not immediately known whether some students attended Northside.
Ebony and Tiffany Riley, sisters with three children together at Northside Elementary, described the incident as “crazy” and “traumatic”.
“We ran out into the parking lot. We didn’t see anything and we went to pick up my daughter after school and that’s when we saw all the police coming and everything,” the sisters said. speak. “We hope they make it through and their injuries are not serious and for the driver as well. Whoever that driver is, we hope they are okay as this was not intentional. “
The incident is still under investigation.
