2022 Infiniti QX55 Road Test


SAUGATUCK, Mich. 2022 Infiniti QX55 not our first choice for a long weekend getaway to the frozen shores of Lake Michigan. Nothing against this style intersection – it’s not all so big. Especially for two adults, a preschooler, a golden retriever and all the essentials for a winter break. The night before we left, in the driveway past Culver’s, we decided, “Hey, this is really cool. Let’s hope everything is right.”

More important decisions were made with less thought, so the next morning, I started packing QX55. At 26.9 cubic feet, there’s actually more cargo space than coupe-style crossovers like 2022 Audi Q5 Sportback, Mercedes GLC Coupe and BMW X4. However, the graceful roof lines limit the storage capacity for all of this. In my opinion, they are more commuter crossovers. If you need real space, you will choose the more vertical type QX50 and its 31.4 cubic feet of cargo room.

But what the hell is a cubic foot, really? The trunks and cargo area are often the same shape in terms of raw weight, and the QX55 turns out to be surprisingly spacious. I carried a large Samsonite (19 inches long by 13.5 inches wide), a giant duffel bag, a box of groceries and belongings, a can of beer, a sleigh, and a few other things, plus with two heavy winter coats placed on top. For the return trip, we stuffed more things into it, including a trash bag filled with laundry and beer from the local brewing scene. On the way there, I could look behind. It’s a trade-off and something you’ll want to consider if you’re buying something like the QX55. You need to really like the style and this segment includes looks like X4, looks more visually appealing than their boxing brethren. QX55 share InfinitiIts variable-compression turbo makes 268 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, so there’s no compelling powertrain reason to look for a coupe version. Although 55 is stiffer than 50, you really need to be an engineer to tell the difference.

The handlebars are light and the suspension is tuned for comfort. If you’re looking for a driver, consider any German competition first, although the VC turbo is an interesting engine with some heart. Infiniti has invested in this technology and deserves credit for using it across its entire product line to deliver remarkable performance. energy saving (25 mpg combined). Unfortunately, the CVT cripples the engine’s potential, like we noted in our first Drive review last year.

For a road car, the QX55 is a mixed bag. At highway speeds louder than I expected, the snow and then the rain made things worse. The cruise control system works well, maintaining distance and speed, although the lane-departure feature is uncomfortably overactive. The interior is attractive in black and gray, with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and seats. The 16-speaker Bose system sounds great, and the cabin feels premium. That said, the “Infiniti InTouch Dual HD display” and navigation system are clunky to use and struggle to find basic locations, such as popular parks and restaurants. We finally got it and it was average. Outside of intuitive systems like Stellantis’ Unconnect, it’s often easier to use your phone for in-car navigation, and Infiniti falls into that category, too.

My tester costs $53,425 in the mid-tier Essential edition (learn more about QX55 Series in our 2022 Buying Guide). It’s a good value, especially for the segment. The price includes the $800 proassist package (LED headlights, smart cruise control and lane departure) and destination fees.

Infiniti compare QX55 to the much-praised FX crossover from a decade ago. With its powerful powertrain and impressive styling, the FX was ahead of its time. The QX55 is merely stepping out into the market. It’s a good value and looks sharp. As we have discussed in previous reviews, it is about average in the competitive segment. But we already know that. The question here is: can you own a compelling commuter crossover and use it as a weekend warrior for the family? Of course, it can be done. I camped in a Chevy Tahoe and spent a week in the Upper Peninsula in a Mk 7 Volkswagen Golf GTI, so I lived on both ends of the spectrum. However, the QX55 is perfectly suited for transporting people and belongings (and a very large breed dog) over 400 miles. It made me rethink a bit the concept of intersections between vehicles.
