2022 South World University – Best and worst from super regions

Then there are eight.

But to get to eight, we start with 16 before the snap of Thanos, the NCAA’s superlative baseball team. But like the Mad Titan, those teams have to work for it. We’ve had a weekend filled with ramblings, web gems, and lightning-fast delays. Therefore. Much. Delay due to lightning.

Before we pack our steak sauce and Father’s Day cards and head to Omaha cho Men’s university world series, let’s take a look back at the slightly smaller shindig which is a masterpiece, a game full of heroes. Super hero. Sorry, Thanos, too soon?

The worst Omaha-related curse tied to a guy shouting “Omaha!”: Peyton Manning

The angry knocking you hear is from my wife and I in Knoxville and former roommates in Tennessee for having the audacity to mention the Vols falling from 1st place overall to watching the CWS on TV… not to mention blasphemy number 18. But in my defense, Manning entered the super league and our shared alma mater lost again. It happens a lot. And I’m not the first Big Orange alum to point that out.

The most amazing super-regional statistics: No. 1 has fallen

When Tennessee lost, it marked the third consecutive NCAA baseball tournament in which the No. 1 seed failed to reach Omaha. Even further, the top-ranked team hasn’t won the CWS title since Miami…in 1999! Next year, the team that seems to be seeded as number one may want to “accidentally” get lost on their collegiate bus ride and try to drop a spot or two. Just beware.

Best Joe Namath Impersonation: Ole Miss DH Tim Elko

Elko had an absurd start to the season, taking the Rebels to No. 1, but suffered an ACL tear as soon as the SEC game started. For the average person, that means a six-month recovery. He’s back in less than a month, and his bat has started right where it left off in early spring. Now, the unranked Miss Ole will travel to Omaha after beating Miss Host Southern region with a combined score of 15-0. So any of this has anything to do with Broadway Joe? Because Elko said this to College Baseball Nation back in pre-season: “If we make it to Omaha, we’ll be national champions.”

Best Dr. Trick Stone Strange Time: SEC! SECOND!

If you’re wondering what the SEC baseball tourney will look like in 2023 (or 2024, whenever the current rearranged Rubik’s Cube eventually stops spinning), just take a look at this Omaha frame. Half of the teams in the field are current SEC members, and two more will join the conference as soon as the paperwork can be processed. You might hate “SEC!” exclaims all you want and many people do, but to quote the great philosopher (and Georgia Bulldogs fan) Richard Morgan Flair, “Whether you like it or not, learn to love it. Because that’s it. is the best thing of the day. Woooooo!”

Best Teammate: Stanford cheers for Texas A&M

It’s no secret that coach Jim Schlossnagle has bolstered his first Aggies lineup by working on the John Williams-like transfer gate with a baton in front of the operator. Among his biggest signings is pitcher Jacob Palisch, who pitched in two CWS games a year ago against Stanford and is now back with Texas A&M after being in the final against him. Omaha wharf in front of Louisville. And where is his biggest cheer outside College Station? The ranch where his former teammates Cardinal is finishing dinner before starting work to earn tickets back to the big show.

Best Audition Tape for “Ridiculousness”: Oklahoma OF Kendall Pettis

Someone’s on the phone my man Rob Dyrdek because Pettis dribbled with speed after going over the bullpen wall on the left to capture a big game foul at Virginia Tech. He then threw a homer over the wall to break the match just yards from where he nearly broke his neck.

Best Geography Lesson: Texas at East Carolina

I’m a native of eastern North Carolina, and my father played college baseball in East Carolina, so I grew up proud to know the names of every city and hamlet between Raleigh and the Outer Banks. But I never assumed that everyone outside the area knew all those towns. However, all of my friends from Texas 100% grew up believing that every American was raised to learn about places like Dripping Springs, Marfa, and Kilgore as if they were Detroit, Atlanta, and Seattle. That’s why, when the Longhorns determined Sunday’s endlessly delayed weather in Greenville, North Carolina, this was the perfect tweet.

The worst difference to own: ECU

A week ago we told you that ECU is the best college baseball program to never make the trip to Omaha. Sadly, for Pirates fans, that “honor” remained unchanged, even after their team led 7-2 in the seventh inning of a match that should have been won. in three games against the Longhorns on Saturday. That’s now 32 appearances after the NCAA season, 17 games of this century and seven super-regional games since 2001, including two at the buzzing Clark-LeClair Stadium. However, the road to Omaha was still blocked by pirate ships. Breakthrough is coming. It must. Right?

North Carolina’s Best Name: UNC OF Vance Honeycutt

Again, I’m from North Carolina, so I know that this guy from the baseball-crazy towns of Shelby and Salisbury has the most Carolina name ever, Robert Vance Honeycutt IV. (His dad, by the way, played for the Tar Heels team that made it to Omaha in 1989.) Believe me, this is like giving a kid in New York the name Vinny Greenwich Broadway Jr. or naming a Texas-born baby Tex OK, yes, it happens all the time.

Best Walk: The Omahogs

After one last dramatic month from the 64-team tourney leap, it was inevitable that we would have at least one walk to claim a CWS spot. It happened at the end of the ninth track at Chapel Hill, when Arkansas designated killer Brady Slavens slaps an eye-stalker through the infield who drove in victory and spawned a hound immediately, uh, pig. That hit is almost as dramatic as this camera works by and Hogs’s react to it.
