The Nissan Z 2023 comes with a twin-turbo V6 with 400 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. This tester comes with a six-speed manual transmission and the price tag is in the mid-$50,000 range. It’s a blast to drive, and it looks like it’s worth the wait. But can you sleep in it?

The answer is obviously not! There is no reason why you would choose this vehicle to camp or take a long road trip with the purpose of sleeping in it. But what if you’re on your short 5-hour drive home from vacation when suddenly your eyes get heavy and you have to take a nap? Is it possible to catch a comfortable z number? Let’s find out together.

No one has looked at a two-seater sports car and immediately thought, wow, that’s a lot of cargo space. At least not immediately. That doesn’t mean it can’t happen. The C7 Corvette is one such car. I drove that car to my wedding, five hours away, and loaded it with golf clubs, a rental suit, and a week’s worth of vacation luggage. On the way home, my wife and I brought a whole set of luggage, wedding dresses and various wedding gifts without feeling too cramped.

C7, although surprisingly broad, may be the exception that proves the rule. With a cargo space of just 6.9 cubic feet, the Nissan Z 2023 has less than half the cargo space of the Corvette. That said, when I picked up this car from the airport, my wife and I easily left our luggage in the back. Two personal items and two hand luggage shouldn’t be a problem, but a large, hard-sided checked bag will leave you wondering how to get home.

For occupant spaces, Z is similarly challenged. At 5’7″ and 145 pounds on a clear day, I even feel big in the driver’s seat. The saddle does recline backwards, though nowhere is flat, and if I put my feet up. after the brake and clutch pedals, I can muster what some might call comfort. The heavy fixation on the seat, which I think can make sitting uncomfortable, really. helped me here. They are just the right size to comfortably hug me in the seat, similar to the feel of a heavy blanket, although if you’re bigger than me you can I feel different. Can I take a nap here? that show.

In terms of interior storage, the Z once again ranks below average. Feel a theme here? There are two cup holders in the center of the vehicle, one of which requires moving the armrest backwards to reach it. There are two more in the doors, each of which will hold a 12 oz can and possibly a smaller water bottle. Want to fit a 30 oz Nalgene or Yeti? Not here, my friend. The center console is large enough for a 12 oz can or two phones and some cables, though depending on the model they may or may not fit. Those two phones can both be charged thanks to two USB ports, one regular USB and the other USB-C. The only storage in the front is a small glove box. Like I said before, not a friendly ride.

The small windows and dark interior somehow make the Z feel more cramped than it already is. I’ll say this though: For a two-seat sports car, I like the rear view. If all you’re doing is peering through the rear window, the Z feels airy.

Looks great, sounds good and is fun to drive, especially with a manual transmission, but the Nissan Z is a horrible car to sleep in. I don’t think this should come as a surprise to anyone. The Nissan Z gets less of a z than its name suggests. 0.4 out of 5. You need to take a road trip and all you have is this car? Borrow someone else’s SUV or check out Turo. Your later will thank me.
