2023 Volkswagen Amarok revealed: Everything you need to know

Volkswagen finally revealed its new Amarok before slated to arrive in Australia in early 2023.

This story is being updated as Volkswagen reveals more details in its live stream. Check back often for more.

The new Amarok is built on the same platform as the Ford Ranger, with power from five engine choices.

The title numbers for Amarok are:

  • Three 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines with outputs from 110kW to 154kW
  • A 3.0 liter turbo-diesel V6 with 177kW or 184kW
  • A 2.3 liter turbocharged petrol engine with a capacity of 222kW

All models with more than 154kW will have a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Single-cabin and dual-cab body types will be offered, with payloads up to 1.2 tonnes and brake traction up to 3.5 tonnes.

Volkswagen will offer three trim levels: Amarok, Life and Style. The same walking pattern is used across the wider VW range.

Inside, a 10.0-inch or 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system will appear in the center of the dashboard. A digital instrument cluster will also be available.

As we all know, this new model is based on the platform of the new generation Ford Ranger and shares its main mechanics, and promises a huge modernization compared to its predecessor from 2010 , and the V6 engine aside looks pretty outdated.

It also stands out from its base brother Ford with its unique exterior and interior design, and thus appears to be more than a mere badge engineering exercise.

While the new Amarok is seen as a “mainstay” for Volkswagen Commercial in Asia, Africa and Europe, this is especially true for Australia – potentially becoming our favorite number one global market. mid-size car.

A small surprise is that much of the design and engineering was done in Australia, where VW employees were involved in the development of the Ford Ranger.

It is also almost certain that the Amarok will be the Volkswagen Group’s best-selling product in Australia when it launches in early 2023.

This time, it will be produced in South Africa instead of Argentina as before, and unlike the Ranger that is made in Thailand.

Powertrain

Power in the Amarok will come from a range of five engines; four turbocharged diesel engines and one turbocharged petrol engine.

Three 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engines are on offer. The base engine is a single turbocharger with a power output of 110kW/350Nm or 125kW/405Nm. The first version is offered with rear-wheel drive and a five-speed manual transmission as standard, the second with a choice of rear four-wheel drive or convertible and a six-speed manual transmission.

Next is a bi-turbo engine with 150kW or 154kW of power and 500Nm of torque. Depending on the market, it will be paired with a six- or 10-speed automatic transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive.

The top diesel engine will be a 3.0-liter V6 with 177kW or 184kW (depending on market) and 600Nm of torque. It’s paired with full-time four-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Some markets will be offered a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine making 222kW and 452Nm, with all-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic transmission.

As before, all-wheel drive will be offered. The base system with the switchable 2H/4H will be offered alongside the 4Motion all-wheel drive system.
