2024 Polestar 2 switches to rear-wheel drive as part of major update

The North Star is making significant changes to 2 for the 2024 model year. The entry-level version of the electric sedan transitions from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive, and all variants regardless of powertrain configuration All motions have a new design, more range, and additional features.

Switching from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive is a big change that would be significantly more difficult to achieve with a gasoline-powered car but it’s pretty straightforward in a tram. Polestar has taken advantage of the new layout to update the engine: both rear- and all-wheel drive versions of both receive next-generation motors and frequency converters, and they’re much faster than their predecessors. with the models they replace.

The rear-wheel drive 2 makes 299 horsepower and 361 pound-feet of torque, up from 231 and 243 respectively in front-wheel drive model. The additional power reduces the time from 0 to 60 mph to 5.9 seconds (1.1 seconds faster than before). Output of the dual-motor four-wheel-drive system tested at 421 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque, and engineers turned the dial in the latter direction for sharper handling.

Driving range is also improved. The single engine 2 gets an EPA-estimated 300-mile rating (up from 265 miles previously) thanks in part to a new, larger engine the battery The pack has an available capacity of 82 kilowatt-hours, while the dual-motor version keeps the 78 kilowatt-hour pack but is now rated at 270 miles thanks in part to a function that disconnects the front engine when it’s not needed. Polestar notes that rear-wheel drive 2 is compatible with 205 kilowatt DC fast charging. Interestingly, the all-wheel drive model does not; it topped out at 155 kilowatt-hours.

The optional Performance Package is still available and now includes 20-inch alloy wheels with a rim-inspired design fitted to the 3 outside of Brembo brake, Öhlins dual flow valve dampers and yellow seatbelts. It also increases the output of the 2-wheel drive system to 455 hp and reduces the time from 0 to 100 km/h to 4.1 seconds. While only cars ordered new with this package get 20-inch wheels, Öhlins suspension, and seat belts specifically, the power boost is also available with downloadable, over-the-air software updates.

Most of the visual changes are found at the front, where the designers have replaced the 2’s grille with what Polestar calls the SmartZone. Also found on the three revealed in 2022, the SmartZone is a trim that houses hardware like the front camera and mid-range Radar.

Polestar hasn’t revealed the interior photos of the 2 yet, but it doesn’t look like much has changed from a design perspective. However, the list of standard features of the 2 all-wheel drive will increase with the addition Pilot Package, which includes blind spot information system with steering assist, cross-traffic alert with brake assist, rear collision warning mitigation system, adaptive cruise control, 360-degree camera, technology Steering Assist, auto-dimming door mirrors and LED front fog lights with cornering assist. Wireless phone charger is the standard as well.
