2026 FIFA World Cup Will Include Canada

Canada, Mexico and the US – the three host nations of the 2026 World Cup – will automatically qualify for the competition, FIFA confirmed on Wednesday.

The long tradition of host nations entering the competition will continue, with the global soccer body saying all three will avoid preliminary matches.

This is the first time FIFA has automatically approved three host countries to qualify.

The 2022 World Cup is the first time in 36 years that the Canadian men’s team has qualified. Canada lost in all group stage matches. Automatic entry to the 2026 tournament is a positive for Canada Soccer, which is building a youth team.

Vancouver and Toronto are among the host cities for the 2026 World Cup, with matches being held at BC Place and BMO Stadium.

The CONCACAF tournament will also see changes to the number of teams competing as FIFA approves an expansion from 32 teams to 48, with six slots allotted to qualify for qualifying, including all three host nations. .

The announcement comes as FIFA highlights record revenue of US$7.6 billion for the 2019 to 2022 cycle. The agency is expected to earn US$11 billion between 2023 and 2026, the FIFA press release states.

The application to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be approved by the FIFA Council next month. The 2030 FIFA World Cup bid approval process will begin in June 2023.
