23-year-old man shot inside Marcus movie theater in Oakdale, suspect on the run

OAKDALE, Minn. – Oakdale police are investigating after a 23-year-old Hugo man was shot inside the Marcus Cinema in Oakdale on Tuesday night.

According to police, officers were dispatched to the theater, located on 5677 Hadley Ave. N., to report a shooting. Upon arrival, the victim was found at theater 17 with suspected gunshot wounds.

Police said the suspected shooter had fled the theater before they arrived and has yet to be arrested. Police do not believe this was a random act.

The victim was taken to Regional Hospital in St. Paul, where he required surgery. Police said he is still hospitalized and is expected to recover.

People inside the theater at the time of the shooting said the scene was chaotic.

Angie Wright, who was watching the movie at a nearby theater, said: ‘Suddenly the officers were screaming to get out, there were probably three people at the door. “There’s a little bit of chaos, is this real, is this really happening? People move out into a completely chaotic situation where they’re looking in cars and trying to find it. Who’s the shooter?”

Others say panic started when loved ones called to spread the word about the shooting.

Chris Meads, whose daughter was watching the film at the time of filming, said: “I think it’s probably just every parent’s worst nightmare. Meads said he and his wife received a call shortly after.

“It’s the idea that you’ve got your daughter sitting in a movie theater, and literally a movie theater across from them, you’ve got someone bleeding from a gunshot wound. to the chest,” he said. “It’s just the idea that you are

close to something. You start thinking about all the other shootings that happened, and you start thinking about how important it could be. ”

“You’ve seen a lot of episodes or reenactments of shootings, like at the Colorado theater a few years ago. That’s what pops into your head immediately, like, is this my moment? ?” Wright said.

The cinema said it will remain closed during the investigation. No other injuries.

Anyone with information is asked to call Oakdale police via Washington County Dispatch at 651-439-9381.
