3 rounds involved in fatal crash on icy Alberta highway

EDMONTON –

One person was killed in a mid-semester heap during the QEII between Edmonton and Calgary Thursday morning.

The RCMP said at around 6:15 a.m., one seller was reported as jackknifed and hit by a second half north of Ponoka. The third half can’t stop and slide to the others.

One of the pickup truck drivers was killed.

It is not clear how many vehicles were involved in total.

As of noon, the Mounties expects northbound traffic to need to be rerouted at the Highway 53 overpass in a few hours.

The RCMP is calling freezing rain a factor.

Thursday morning, Freezing rain froze roads across Edmonton. Weather warnings have been issued as far north as the MD of the Big Lakes and Opportunity, and south to Ponoka. Nearly 60 accidents in Edmonton have been reported to city police. The RCMP said it received 45 calls in the area where one person was injured or possibly injured.

Again The crash also involved a semi-dead two north of the capital city.
