3rd case of monkeypox reported in Georgia after resident attended Chicago convention
Atlanta, Ga. (CBS46) – The Georgia Department of Public Health has confirmed a third case of monkeypox in the state of Georgia.
According to GDPH, an Atlanta man attended a conference in Chicago and is believed to have contracted the virus there.
His case is unrelated to the two previous Georgia cases that were reported. The man is currently self-isolating and GDPH is doing contact tracing.
According to Newsweek, a group of monkeypox cases linked to a conference in Chicago called International Mr. Leather. The convention attracts fans of slavery, domination, sadism and masochism, and BDSM.
The conference runs from May 26 to 30. Five cases have been linked to the convention – one Chicago resident and four from other states.
Smallpox in monkeys is transmitted direct contact with body fluids or sores in humans with monkeypox. It can also be spread through respiratory secretions when people come into close, face-to-face contact.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, 64 cases have been confirmed in the US and more than 1,600 cases have been reported worldwide, mainly in Europe.
