4 Canadian men held in Syria must be repatriated: judge

OTTAWA –

A judge has ordered the Liberal government to help bring home four Canadian men being held in camps in Syria.

In a ruling today, Federal Court Judge Henry Brown directed Ottawa to request the men’s repatriation as soon as possible and provide them with passports or emergency travel documents.

Brown said that a federal government representative had to go to Syria to help facilitate the return of the men after their captors agreed to hand them over.

Canadians are among many foreign nationals in refugee camps in Syria run by Kurdish forces, who have recaptured the war-torn area from the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant extremist groups.

Family members of the men, as well as some of the women and children, argued in court that the government must arrange for their return, saying that refusing to do so was a violation of the Charter. on Rights and Freedoms.

An attorney for six Canadian women and 13 children in the camps reached an agreement this week with the federal government to bring them home.
