5 Common Kodi Errors and How to Fix Them

Troubleshooting your favorite streaming service

Community makes Kodi so great but such an approach is only found lacking with the support you can get resolving issues. With an immense amount of content available through add-ons, Kodi has been an industry leader in many regards. However, there’s no denying the frustration you might feel if you find the app not running correctly or hit a snag. With that in mind, we now cover some of the most common Kodi errors and offer solutions you can employ.

Kodi keeps crashing, restarting, or pausing

Installing Kodi only to see it crashing or restarting is the ultimate drawback. However, if you keep your cool and have patience in an attempt to fix it, there are a couple of quick fixes that just might do it for you. Firstly, let’s cover some of the reasons that could be behind the crashes:

  • Outdated graphics drivers
  • Older software
  • Hardware acceleration
  • Incompatible or damaged add-ons and skins

Cover the basics first! Make sure your graphic drivers are up-to-date and ready to run. You can do this via Control Panel and through Device manager or by going to the manufacturer’s website and downloading the latest version manually. Make sure you have the correct Time and Date settings too, with unchecked Synchronize with an Internet time server box.

You will need to make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest stable version of Kodi from the official website. If you can open Kodi, we suggest toggling hardware acceleration before anything else under: SettingsPlayerVideosAllow hardware acceleration -DXVA2.

Also, if you recently installed any skins or add-ons, the obvious step is to try removing them. You can do so by:

  • Selecting Add-ons from the left-hand side menu,
  • Holding down the Select button,
  • Clicking Information,
  • Uninstall from the menu at the bottom.

You can remove add-on data alone, but you will first have to see hidden (or parent) files. Enable this by:

  • Opening Settings,
  • Selecting Media,
  • Going to General settings,
  • Checking the Show hidden files and directories box.

You then find and delete specific files in addon_data folder in the File manager. Ultimately, the last resort remains resetting and reinstalling Kodi, even if it could prove a big deal for long-standing users with many skins and add-ons installed.

Kodi can’t install or uninstall an add-on

In all honesty, there’s little you can do about add-ons failing to install. Still, let’s cover some of the main reasons behind it, where add-ons could be:

  • Outdated and out of dev support,
  • Incompatible with your version of Kodi,
  • Lacking dependencies they relied on.

While you could be eager to find older versions of the addon or to revert your Kodi to a previous version, we can hardly advocate it. These pose enough risk as it is and using older versions will never be the same experience, so it could be best to search for alternative add-ons instead.

On the other hand, if you are unable to uninstall an add-on for one reason or another, follow these steps to delete them from outside the app:

  • Go to C: drive
  • Open the Users folder,
  • Select the User account you are using,
  • Open AppData
  • Click on Roaming,
  • Open Kodi and select plugins you want to delete.

Can’t remove a Kodi build

It’s great when you have some of the best Kodi builds and you are happy with them. These allow you a more laid back approach and few hassles with skins, add-ons, and general settings. However, removing a build you don’t like could prove more of a task, as it’s not a straightforward process and reinstalling Kodi will not do it.

Still, you can follow a step-by-step guide with Fusion repo as follows:

  • Go Add-ons under System settings
  • Select Install from zipping,
  • Click on Fusion,
  • Go to Start-here and select plugin.video.freshstart-1.0.5.zip or the latest version,
  • Then find Fresh Start in the list of the add-ons installed,
  • Confirm and wait for Kodi to restart..

Kodi does not update add-ons

We have already stated the importance of keeping the Kodi app and add-ons up to date above. It’s crucial for a glitch-free experience but for security reasons as well, where outdated apps create windows of opportunity for breaches. This means add-ons failing to update could mean a headache. There are three steps to act when you get an ‘Update failed’ error:

  • Discover the repository causing it,
  • See if the repository is still active,
  • Manually update it.

To find out which repository is causing the error, open Add-ons from the left-hand side menu, go to the Information tab of the app that fails to update, and see the name of the repository on the left. Then it’s time for research, where you look for news of the particular repository closing or moving.

If you find the repository closed, you should remove the add-on from Kodi. However, if it moved, you can use the new URL by opening your File Manager, finding the repository in question and selecting Edit source before you paste it.

Kodi Buffering Fix

Whether you’re streaming on Kodi or YouTube, seeing videos buffering is a major pain for us. Again, we move on to some of the major reasons behind slow or no loading before seeing what you can actually do about it. These include:

  • Slow Internet connection,
  • Network congestions,
  • Cache settings.

You’d think there’s little to do about the first one. However, Internet bandwidth throttling done by ISPs can seriously harm your streaming habits. You can avoid this by using a VPN. On the other hand, network congestions are out of our hands and will most likely be on the source. You can try a different add-on using another source if that’s a possibility. Last but not the least, cache settings can influence the speeds you’re getting. If you are unsure how to tweak them, we found that Open Wizard add-on works like a charm in resolving these issues (more on this here).

Final Thoughts: Asking for Help Elsewhere

Even though Kodi does not offer direct lines for customer support, there are ways to get help even if you couldn’t find your issue above. Kodi boasts a great community and we have been able to diagnose and solve many of the errors we got through Wiki how-to guides and the forum. Active members ready to help certainly bring value to the app itself and there’s little that can go unanswered among developers and fans.
