5-year-old killed in Metro East fire identified | Headline News St. Louis


ALTON, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A 5-year-old child who died in a Metro East home fire has been identified.

On Monday, firefighters rushed to put out the fire at Belle Meadows Apartments on Mitchell Street around 7:15 p.m. in Alton. Five-year-old Malachi Scruggs is trapped inside a building engulfed in flames. The fire brigade found Scruggs and he was quickly taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Following the tragic death, Alton Police Chief Marcos Pulido said the department “would like to extend its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Malachi Scruggs.”
