6.2 earthquake leaves 2 dead, many injured in western Indonesia

PADANG, INDONESIA – A strong and shallow earthquake struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Friday, killing 2 people and injuring 20, damaging buildings and leaving people on Sumatra island as well as other coastal areas. Neighbors Malaysia and Singapore panicked.

The US Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 6.2 and struck about 66 kilometers northwest of Bukittinggi, a hill town in West Sumatra province. It struck about 12 kilometers below the Earth’s surface.

Suharyanto, head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, said at least two people were killed in West Pasaman district – the area closest to the epicenter – and another 20 were injured as dozens of houses and buildings were damaged. Report crashed. He said the earthquake had also caused a landslide in the district.

Dwikorita Karnawati, head of Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, said there was no danger of a tsunami but warned of possible aftershocks.

Television reports showed a powerful temblor system sending panic into the streets of Padang, the capital of West Sumatra province, and patients in a hospital in West Pasaman being evacuated from the building.

People in neighboring Malaysia and Singapore were also reported to feel tremors. A video circulating on social media shows people gathering in the streets after high-rise buildings in Kuala Lumpur swayed for a few seconds. Witnesses said they saw their doors and chairs shake and the pictures and paintings on the walls also trembled.

Hamsuardi, the mayor of West Pasaman district, said Friday’s quake caused damage to dozens of homes and buildings, including his office. Authorities are still gathering information on the full extent of damage in the affected areas.

In January 2021, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake killed at least 105 people and injured nearly 6,500 in West Sulawesi province.

Indonesia has several seismic faults and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. A powerful earthquake in the Indian Ocean and tsunami in 2004 killed nearly 230,000 people in dozens of countries, mostly in Indonesia.
