A man has been arrested after seven of his dogs attacked a 71-year-old man to death while he was walking to a nearby store.

The incident happened on July 18 in Fresno, Texas, when Freddy Garcia, 71, a native of Fresno, was walking to a store in his neighborhood around 1:30 p.m. when the County Sheriff’s Office Fort Bend received a call from a witness report. Authorities said the man was mauled by seven dogs.

Authorities were on the scene and found Garcia, who was taken immediately via Life Flight to the Hermann Memorial – a hospital in the downtown Houston area – and later presumed dead of the injuries. wound in the attack.

According to a statement from the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s office, four of the dogs were apprehended shortly after their arrest but three were left on the loose for an undisclosed amount of time prior to their arrest. According to authorities, all seven dogs were pit bull mixes, but no owner of the animal was identified at the time.

However, following an investigation by the Sheriff’s Office along with Fort Bend Animal Control and the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office, authorities on Friday were able to identify and arrest Samuel. Cartwright, 47 years old in connection with Garcia’s tragic death.

Cartwright is currently being held at the Fort Bend County Jail and has been charged with Assault by Dog resulting in Death – a second degree felony – and police have confirmed that his bond was placed at level of $100,000.

Meanwhile, Fort Bend Sheriff Eric Fagan said he was grateful the dogs were taken off the street and another potential attack was prevented.

“This horrible tragedy did not have to happen.
