8 TV shows and movies to watch this summer

WHO: Amber Midthunder

WHAT: The talk surrounding the fifth part of Carnivores the movie franchise — an origin story set 300 years ago — is too big to ignore, especially when it comes to the movie’s star, Amber Midthunder (Roswell, New Mexico and Soldiers). Title PreyThe film is set in the Comanche Nation in 1719 and revolves around Naru (Midthunder), a skilled warrior who must protect his camp from a vicious alien threat with technological advancements. Preydirected by Dan Trachtenberg, promises not only to bring Carnivores fans something new and exciting they have never seen before, but it also presents an accurate portrait of the Comanche and celebrates the Indigenous community. The cast is comprised almost entirely of Native and First Nations talent, and the film will be provided in the Comanche language through an alternate dub.

Prey was a project that interested me immediately because… Lots of reasons — almost too many. First of all, I love action. I find it a super fun challenge to be able to complete the action and make it interesting inside a story or somehow still find a unique story or style. The respect I have for Dan as a director is limitless, so whatever he asks me to do, I will do. My admiration for him even preceded me when I was chosen, so that’s part of the fun for me. Then, of course, history for the Indigenous to have a movie like this, where we are seen and shown in the film, especially in a thriller, is different than before. Normally, we’re seen as quasi-extraordinary, savages – super-spiritual caricatures that help guide the protagonist – but in this, we to be protagonist. And we are human beings.

With this film, I hope the audience will see… How interesting this movie is in so many ways. I think it has something for everyone. The action sequences are fun, and the predator is a whole new movie compared to any other. Above all, Dan is a great director. Rich story elements.

Preparing for the role of the warrior Comanche Naru is… Joking jokes. Comanches are incredible fighters, so even considering taking on that, on any level, feels huge but also such an honor. I love this character, and I love this movie. I also think this film and this role represent a lot of the milestones for Indigenous Peoples, especially women, represented in the film. I think about all those aspects constantly, just want to get it right. With all that said, it’s been exciting, and with each passing day living in it, it feels like everything — the story, the characters, the environment on the set — continues to come alive and full. than.

The stories that make me feel excited about working in this industry are… Maybe it’s something where I’m challenged or where I’m having fun. I find a lot of meaning in what I do. The ultimate goal is always to somehow make a change in the world. Whether it’s more opportunity for people like me or just showing a different perspective to everyone. That said, I’m also fortunate to enjoy what I do, so I think having fun is also important.

Aside from acting, some of my other passions include… Recently, I have been stringing beads. I learned it originally when I was young and picked it up again recently. I don’t think I’m that good, but I feel great.

If you make me on duty, chances are I’m wearing… No question, a pair of Lululemon [leggings] and a comfy t-shirt (specifically my Billie Eilish concert t-shirt) with cute little earrings and some of my “always on” bracelets. You know, friends who never take off.

When it comes to fashion, I am absolutely a… Recently, Jordans.

My summer wardrobe wouldn’t be complete without these three pieces… I’m actually redoing my entire wardrobe right now, so you caught me at an interesting time. But this summer, I find my to-do is…
