January saw 82.2% new car buyers pay more than MSRP for their new car, according to data collected by Edmunds. It’s an extraordinary number, even more so when given the context Edmunds data shows that 0.3% of new car buyers pay on MSRP in January 2021.
As we have been reporting for the past several months, lack of new car combined with continued demand for them is the cause for these numbers. On average, one new vehicle purchased in January 2022 was purchased for $728 on MSRP. Data comes from Edmunds, compare the average new car deal price with the automakers’ average MSRP.
Edmunds even breaks down the numbers for individual automakers, so we can see which OEMs are making the most money relative to MSRP. However, we will give advance notice here. Not every brand’s number will reflect everyone’s personal experience. For example, anyone hoping to buy a New Porsche 911 GT3 are likely to be met with far greater ratings than if they asked questions a Macan. Plus, since these numbers only take into account newly sold cars, they don’t illustrate the massive price spikes seen on new, used cars but aren’t technically understandable thing. However, we are sure that you are curious about these brands car sales for the most on MSRP, so here’s Edmunds’ list.
Standing at number one, we have Cadillac with an average gain of $4,048. We doubt Escalade largely to blame for this, but The Blackwing Twins are two other highly-anticipated vehicles that can easily collect large premiums during their initial rollout. Monday is Land Rover, $2,565 on average against MSRP. And perhaps the big surprise of this list is That in third place, averaging $2,289 against MSRP. We doubt Telluride can be blamed for this position on the list. Said above Porsche comes in at number four, but again, this is most likely not your experience if you’re out there shopping for a desirable and low-volume model.
On the good news side, there are a number of automakers that are still keeping average transaction prices below MSRP. The best deals seem to be in Alfa Romeo, which is the lowest average transaction price against the MSRP of any automaker at less than $3,421. No one else is nearby, but Volvo, LincolnRam, BMW car and the Mini are both averages below MSRP.
