9-year-old Elisabet traveled from Honduras to receive care at Ronald McDonald House – CBS Philly

CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) – This Thursday, CBS3 will be presenting our 12th Annual Ronald McDonald House Telethon Charity. We call it “Giving a Little Love” and we will be raising money to help four Ronald McDonald Homes in the Philadelphia area.

The charity helps children like Elisabeth, as well as thousands of children, come to the area for top-notch medical care.

Imagine having to travel to a foreign country, a place where the customs are unfamiliar and the language is different, to get much-needed help.

Meet Elisabet Raudales, 9, aka Ely.

“I dance regueton, I dance dembow and I dance punta,” Elisabet told CBS3 before showing off some of her impressive moves.

Like all 9-year-old girls, she lights up when she talks about the dance fights she often has with her little brother. The smiles continued as she listed all the new friends she made at Ronald McDonald’s house.

Elisabet and her mother and grandmother traveled more than 2,000 miles from Tegucigalpa, Honduras to Ronald McDonald’s home in Camden, New Jersey. That’s where they lived while Ely waited for her upcoming back surgery.

Elisabeth was diagnosed with a severe form of bone defect, also known as brittle bone disease. Ely’s bones break or break easily. During her young life, doctor visits became a regular occurrence.

“It’s hard, because when I bump into things, I get really sick and I have to go to the doctor,” Elisabet said.

Despite her condition, Ely has always been a source of positive energy, her grandmother says proudly. She loves dancing and swimming. She is fluent in both Spanish and English and is currently learning how to speak Portuguese. At just 3 feet tall, there’s nothing small about Ely’s bright and large personality.

The Ronald McDonald home opened its doors to Ely and her family last year. She was pacing back and forth as she received treatments and other medical care that she couldn’t access in Honduras.

“My experience in this house has been beautiful because in this house we have everything we need,” Elisabeth said, adding, “Like food, laundry to do laundry and us there is a bed.”
