9-year-old girl Cary received a life-saving liver transplant at Duke
Chloe’s family say she has been the picture of health all her life but that all changed on November 12, 2021, five days after her birthday.
Morgan Cassell, Chloe’s mother, said: “It’s just getting started. “She started turning to jaundice, and then it became like a snowball from there.”
Chloe was diagnosed with acute liver failure. She received the transplant on November 22 at Duke, and her family hoped to be able to stay in hospital for a few weeks after the surgery, but complications ensued. Chloe had low blood levels and internal bleeding leading to another emergency surgery.
After nearly two months, the third grader at Turner Creek Elementary can finally return home but will have to be homeschooled for several months and have to see the doctor weekly.
Cassells is currently raising funds with the help of Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA), which will help support Chloe in her life-extending medical journey following her transplant.
“She’s handled enough,” Morgan Cassell said. “So to have that support and to know that she never had to struggle and have to decide between like medicine and housing or food because we weren’t always around.
“We can also bless other families who are going through this,” she added.
Chloe’s Crew is starting to raise funds with a goal of $65,000. They will sell t-shirts and host events including raffles and virtual races.
