A 78-year-old local woman lovingly makes blankets for people battling cancer

Recall your first childhood memories. Are they related to a blanket?

If so, it’s probably because they’re soft and warm, and they make you feel good.

In this week’s “Active Cincinnati,” we’ll introduce you to a woman who used the therapeutic warmth of a blanket to help a number of cancer patients.

We met Pat Campbell, 78, in her well-stocked office in Greendale, Indiana. That’s where she’s been putting a lot of effort into a comforter a week for about a year now. For her, it was a kind of “Golden Rule” kindness.

“I see patients getting chemotherapy and think maybe they need a bit of a lift,” she said.

That thought stemmed from her own experience. Pat himself battled cancer. She “gives” because she knows how the game changes in difficult times to “get”.

“A simple little down comforter with flannel in the back for cover in a cold room lets them know someone is thinking about them. YES. Yes,” Campbell said.

So she brings her work from home to the gynecological care home of St. Elizabeth walked the way she had walked. WCPO 9 News was on hand to watch Campbell deliver the blanket to her – to warm not only her body but also her soul.

Nurse Mary Beck said, “A lot of chemotherapy patients need something to feel comfortable with. This is one thing we can offer them to make them feel appreciated. “

And at the same time give them hope.

Survivor Kathy Bryant, who took part in the war, said the quilter’s kindness meant a lot. And it helped her envision her future.

“I have so much left to live for,” said Kathy, “I have some beautiful, beautiful grandchildren. This blanket will stay in my bed for years. I’m not joking with you. ”

Call it a “time touchpoint” — and a way to cover yourself up in love. And it’s all from a woman who understands Kathy’s journey, and takes pleasure in making it a little bit lighter.

Pat says her quilting group, “The Quilt Batts,” has been “successful” with the effort at St.E’s.

They have quilt shows, which is how they earn money to buy materials for the donated quilts.
