Abbotsford flooding: Homes will need to be demolished to build levees, mayor says

Vancouver –

The city of Abbotsford, BC says some houses need to be demolished to collect money and prevent Sumas Prairie from turning into a lake again.

Mayor Henry Braun confirmed the worrying development at a news conference on Thursday afternoon.

According to Braun, the levee protecting the steppe had been breached, and a levy had to be built as soon as possible.

The largest hole on the dike is about 100 meters long. The city plans to use help from the Canadian Armed Forces to build a two-and-a-half-kilometer levee along Highway 1 starting tomorrow morning.

Braun could not say exactly how many homes would need to be foreclosed to facilitate emergency construction.

“I think it’s between 6 and 12,” Braun said in response to a reporter’s question.

“I feel like you’re looking for numbers, so I don’t want someone to think it’s 50 houses,” he added. “One house is too much. And if it were my house, I would worry too. But there are not many options here.”

This is a developing story and will be updated
