Actress Joan Collins Accuses Her First Husband Maxwell Reed of Rape and Attempting to Pimp Her Out
Dame Joan Collins announced her first husband, actor Maxwell Reed, raped her on their first date and tried to lure her to “old rich men” for up to $13,500 (£10,000) a night.
British actress, 88 years old, recounts the attack in a BBC documentary On Saturday night it was claimed the Northern Ireland movie star, who is 14 years her senior, invited her to his home and poured her rum and coke. “In those days, my mother would say I was taken advantage of,” Collins recalls. “Now, we call it dating rape.”
Collins said Reed took her virginity and she married him in 1952 “out of shame”, and throughout their four-year marriage was subjected to constant abuse. The final straw came when Reed allegedly tried to lure her to a Sheikh.
“We were at Les Ambassadoradeurs, a super chic nightclub in Mayfair,” she said. “Max has a habit of attracting rich, elderly men, and I am beginning to have a vague idea of what all this is. Max told me, “He’ll pay you £10,000 for a night — and I might even watch.” I looked at my handsome, obnoxious husband and started to cry. ‘Never in a million years.’ I went home to Mom. ”
The two divorced in 1956, and Reed died in 1974. Collins went on to marry four more times, with actor Anthony Newley, American businessman Ron Kass, singer Peter Holm and her current husband. is the film producer Percy Gibson.
