Airbus registers record earnings | CTV News

AMSTERDAM –

Last year, Airbus posted a record profit of 4.2 billion euros ($4.8 billion) as the planemaker delivered more planes as the global economy recovered from the coronavirus pandemic.

This is the first annual profit for the French manufacturer Toulouse since 2018, before the spread of COVID-19 reduced air travel to levels not seen in the era of jetliners. force.

611 commercial aircraft will be delivered in 2021, up from 566 the previous year. It is an important source of cash for aircraft manufacturers, bringing in 52.1 billion euros ($59.2 billion) in revenue for Airbus last year.

And the company is expected to continue that momentum through 2022, forecasting on Thursday that it will deliver 720 commercial planes this year.

Orders also surged in the helicopters and defense and space businesses.

“The year 2021 is a year of transformation, where our attention shifts from navigating the pandemic to recovery and growth,” said CEO Guillaume Faury.

Emphasizing that point, Faury said Airbus plans to offer a dividend of 1.50 euros ($1.70) per share, its first in two years.

The company recently canceled orders from Qatar Airways for several planes amid disputes over paint and surface quality on some Airbus jets. The Middle East airline is suing Airbus in a London court.

The controversy has benefited US rival Boeing, when Qatar announced that it plans to order Boeing 737 Max jets instead.
