Alert issued as tornado touches down in Cypress County
A tornado warning has been issued for Cypress seeds on Monday afternoon after a torsion vehicle hit southeastern Alberta.
Follow Alberta Emergency Alertone tornado hit Highway 523 and Highway 1 around 1:50 p.m. and caused damage to homes and vehicles in the area.
Residents are asked to pay attention to funnel clouds and take precautions as required.
“Be prepared to seek shelter off the road if you are on the highway and cannot avoid the storm. Seek shelter in a ditch or ravine if a tornado approaches,” the Alberta Emergency Alert wrote.
“Find shelter in basements or reinforced structures.”
One Severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for the area. Environment Canada says its meteorologists are monitoring a dangerous thunderstorm that is likely to produce very strong gusts of wind, golf ball-sized hail and heavy rain.
Just before 2 p.m., the weather agency said the severe thunderstorm was northeast of Y Hat and moving northeast at 50 km/h.
