Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato briefly teased, possibly a coupe
In the first day of this month, Alfa Romeo and Zagato tease Upcoming Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato with a single image of the monolithic LED taillights outlines what looks like a Kamm-style rear end. Zagato recently published a few more trailers on his Instagram page, but someone may have hit the Submit button too soon — the video and image have since disappeared from the source. No problem, because this is the internet. The new photos suggest something that might justify Alfa Romeo boss Jean-Philippe Imparato’s assessment that the car will be “very interesting, very selective and very expensive.” The image shows the carbon-wrapped driver’s seat with new rear window contours and crossbars. The redrawn greenhouse leads us to believe this will be a coupe, making the most of that short wheelbase notation. Some people have called the crossbar roll cage, but to us, it resembles the brace used in some cars that skip the rear seats, such as the original Bentley Continental GT Supersports.
The engine photo doesn’t give away anything but the Quadrifoglio badge. The twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 can have the same 505 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque as the Giulia Quadrifoglio, which can be upgraded to the version’s 532 hp and 442 lb-ft. especially the Giulia GTAm, or, as buyers will hope, it can go beyond that. We expect output to be sent through Alfa’s eight-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential.
Zagato standards such as new mesh air vents and a vented hood will appear elsewhere. The grille features a stylized version of the red cross and viper crown in the Alfa Romeo logo amid the three-part headlights that will debut on the facelifted Giulia. At the rear, a closer shot of the taillights loses the segments between the LEDs, so the rear end won’t be a continuous clamshell piece like the classic Giulia TZ and Giulia TZ2. Bit details like a carbon fiber The front splitter and another clover-shaped wheel from the Giulia GTA make for dark and shiny jewels.
Giulia TZ released in 1963, Giulia SWB Zagato will be the 50th birthday present of the original. Market launch is rumor will arrive in March next year, an official launch will take place shortly before that.
