‘All American,’ ‘The Flash’ Among 7 Early Renewals at The CW – The Hollywood Reporter
The CW has offered several early renewals to its most critically acclaimed scripted originals.
While the Mark Pedowitz-led broadcaster follows a tradition of innovating much of its media early on, the network – currently for sale by owner Warner Media and Paramount – has only granted additional seasons to seven out of 19 Original scripted.
Going back to the 2022-23 broadcast cycle is: All Americans (season five), The Flash (season nine), Kung Fu (third part), Nancy Drew (season four), Riverdale (part seven), Superman & Lois (third part) and Walker (season three). All Americans ranks as The CW’s most-watched series, while The Flash is expected after star Grant Gustin agreed to a new deal to return to what sources say could be the final season. stands for the TV series DC Comics. Superman & Lois arguably the top performer on HBO Max, while Walker has the network’s favorite Jared Padalecki (with a spin-off series also in the works).
Those leaves Batwoman, Seduction, Reign, In The Dark, Legacy, The Legend of Tomorrow, Roswell, Stargirl and freshman programs All Americans: Homecoming, The 4400, Naomi and Tom Swift on the bubble. (Notably Roswell, Stargirl and Tom Swift has not been released yet.)
The CW is expected to release several renewals to its best performing shows like All Americans, The Flash, Riverdale, Superman & Lois and Walker All are considered a padlock to return to. Those who welcome for Kung Fu and Nancy Drew which is a bit more surprising since both shows are considered bubbles. Their early pickups exemplify a vote of confidence in their respective digital and linear performance.
“As we prepare for the 2022-23 season, this scripted series, along with the alternate series we’ve previously refreshed, will serve as a stepping stone to a solid foundation of Use some of our most-watched series as we build for next year, and Pedowitz said. “These dramas are also important to our overall digital strategy, as they are some of our most streamed and socially engaged shows, and we look forward to adding adding more new films and comebacks to help strengthen and expand our diverse footprint.”
Over the past few years, Pedowitz has refreshed nearly all of The CW’s scripted roster as he works diligently to open up the network that specializes in younger generation into year-round originals. That changed this year when the CW company backed CBS Studios (a division of ViacomCBS/Paramount) and Warner Bros. WarnerMedia TV seeks to divest from their respective portfolios.
The CW was previously driven by revenue from the $1 billion Netflix deal. The CW chose not to renew that deal because Warners and Paramount wanted to stream their originals on their respective platforms, HBO Max and Paramount+. International sales have also largely disappeared because those rights, instead of being sold overseas and contributing millions of dollars to the respective studios, are now also kept in-house. Nexstar Terminal Group is seen as a forerunner of The CW’s acquisition, although other suitors have also joined. An agreement could come before or after the confrontation in May.
Meanwhile, the CW is looking to keep business as usual as Pedowitz has delivered three pilot orders this year. While Nexstar knows how shows on The CW perform, early indicators suggest that the station group – if a deal can be reached – can keep things running in the future and expand. door to purchase from vendors other than CBS Studios and Warners .
However, the sale of The CW – over time – could change the face of The CW as it is unclear what the potential buyer’s long-term plans may be.
It should be pointed out that of Tuesday’s seven renewals, five were from Warners and only two were from CBS Studios. The CW was previously tasked with getting a 50-50 balance of originals from both studios.
