Alphonso Davies Named Canadian Footballer of the Year

Bayern Munich star and national team anchor Alphonso Davies was named Canadian Footballer of the Year on Wednesday.

Davies, who has five goals and eight assists for Canada this year, won the award for the third time in four seasons.

The 21-year-old from Edmonton has made 13 international appearances for Canada in 2021. He scored a standout goal in October against Panama in a CONCACAF World Cup qualifying match in Toronto.

Davies also won a third consecutive Bundesliga title as well as the FIFA Club World Cup with Bayern Munich.

Jonathan David finished second in the poll of Canadian coaches and members of the media. Cyle Larin, Tajon Buchanan and Stephen Eustaquio are also considered.

Canada Soccer will name a co-winner from the women’s national team on Friday.

Also on Wednesday, the union said deputy secretary general Joe Guest would step down at the end of the month.

He has 16 years in a senior leadership role in the organization.
