Despite the huge electronics craze in the auto industry, some people are still exploring usage designs alternative fuels as hydrogen. Alpine, in a project with the Istituto Europeo di Design, one of the leading transportation design schools in the world, has created a hydrogen-powered car supercar that will be revealed on March 18th. For now, it is being teased.
Alpine has revealed very little precious about the car so far. Called the Alpine A4810, it was designed in collaboration with 28 IED students as part of their Master’s thesis project in Transportation Design. As a result, the emphasis will be on the design, with its low, rounded curves embodying the Alpine tradition. The brand’s signature quadrilateral headlights are hexagonal instead of the usual round, and the new signature LED illumination extends the width of the front.
Additionally, we can see bulging wheel arches front and rear, a fighter dome-style greenhouse and taillights that seem to extend from the rear bodywork. Oh, and the Alpine logo on the nose also glows.
The stated goal of the project is to develop something as extreme as a supercar but with sustainability. Interestingly, instead of a battery-electric setup, the IED’s description specifically calls for a hydrogen powertrain. However, it does not specify if it is fuel cells or internal combustion engines using hydrogen fuel. The following example, would be something like Toyota’s Corolla-based hydrogen racing car.
In the grand scheme of things, it probably wouldn’t matter too much, since this is primarily a design study. Alpine also has has made moves to develop fully electric sport car. It has many chances to be put into production like Suzuki Misano Concept previously designed by the IED. However, it can serve as a visual guide to the company’s future vehicles.
