Amazon cuts down on plastic packaging in Germany
BERLIN – Amazon says it plans to cut down on the use of plastic packaging in Germany following complaints that the online retailer is contributing to mountains of waste.
The company said Monday that its logistics center will replace all single-use plastic packages with paper bags or cardboard boxes by the end of the year.
Exceptions may be made when third-party sellers provide products in relabelable packaging for delivery and when shippers are required to leave products in outdoor locations during rain, the company said. .
Environmental groups in Germany have long urged Amazon, as one of the largest online retailers, to take the lead in reducing unnecessary waste.
