Amazon faces Teamsters union drive at Canadian warehouse

Amazon warehouse staff in Alberta, Canada, have filed for a union election, a serious labor union said Tuesday, marking the retail big’s newest labor combat.

The Worldwide Brotherhood of Teamsters, by means of a neighborhood chapter, late Monday filed for a vote on union illustration with the Alberta Labor Relations Board at an Amazon warehouse in Nisku, Alberta, often known as YEG1. The labor company should first approve the election, at which level all staff at YEG1 employed as of Sept. 13 will have the ability to vote whether or not to affix Teamsters Native Union 362. A spokesperson from Teamsters Canada stated the warehouse employs between 600 and 800 staff.

The union drive represents the most recent try to prepare Amazon staff, a highly sought after goal amongst labor unions within the U.S. and overseas for a few years.

In April, staff at Amazon’s Bessemer, Alabama, warehouse voted overwhelmingly in opposition to unionization, with fewer than 30% of the votes tallied in favor of becoming a member of the Retail, Wholesale and Division Retailer Union. The union challenged the results of the election, claiming Amazon illegally interfered within the course of, and the Nationwide Labor Relations Board is expected to issue a ultimate determination within the coming weeks.

Even after the loss in Alabama, labor unions have continued efforts to prepare Amazon staff. The Teamsters in June approved a decision to fund and provide assets to Amazon staff hoping to unionize.

Teamsters Native Union 362 says YEG1 staff have raised issues round discrimination and wages. Though Amazon just lately bumped up hourly pay to between $17 and $21.65, staff say the pay increase coincided with the elimination of a month-to-month efficiency bonus, “which means that many Amazon staff are uncertain that the brand new increase will really translate to extra money on their paychecks,” Teamsters Native Union 362 stated.
