An investigation is underway after a Milwaukee valet found a body inside the burned vehicle.

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – A shocking discovery at a city lot has kicked off an internal investigation at the Milwaukee Fire Department.

A human body was found in a vehicle on Sunday, January 9, but the discovery was not by firefighters.

Just before 6 a.m. on Sunday, fire officials responded to a vehicle fire near 76 and Green Road.

Officials say the burning vehicle was adjacent and spread to an empty one-story rehabilitation center. The car was “burnt out” and was towed to the street.

Cell phone video shows the fiery crash outside the former Bridges Senior Rehabilitation Center. The building was also damaged by the fire.

Police said a 21-year-old woman was found dead inside, but it was not until later towed to a city lot near 38 and Lincoln. That’s where a valet found the woman’s remains in the back of a car around 9:23 a.m.

The incident is being investigated by the Milwaukee Police Department and the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Milwaukee Fire Department is conducting an internal investigation to determine whether standard operating instructions and procedures were followed during this incident.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Milwaukee police at (414) 935-7360 or, to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-TIPS or the P3 Tips App.
