Anthony Anderson Reacts to Emmy Snubs for The Last Season of Black-ish – The Hollywood Reporter
Anthony Anderson experienced mixed emotions while hosting a guest show Jimmy Kimmel Live! on the day the 2022 Emmy Awards nominations were announced.
Anderson, who entered host Jimmy Kimmel’s name on Tuesday, opened his monologue by congratulating the late-night show’s team on being nominated for the variety talk series. However, Anderson went on to point out that it wasn’t a happy moment for his own ABC comedy series Black-ishsigned in April after eight seasons and earned just two crafty nominations for the final season: contemporary apparel and contemporary hairstyling.
Anderson said: “Look, I don’t want to put the mood down, but I do mean a lot to the Academy. “You know who wasn’t nominated for a Primetime Emmy this morning? America’s lover, me! That’s right, me – Anthony Anderson – and my show too, Black-ishor my co-star, Tracee Ellis Ross. “
Then he spoke to his mother, Doris Bowman, who was sitting in the stands, and asked her, “Can you believe it, Mom?” The actor continued to joke, “Look, I’m not saying that the voters are stupid not to nominate me or Black-ish or Tracee. I’m saying they’re racist.”
Anderson mentions that three of the shows nominated for best comedy this year – HBO’s BarryFX’s What do we do in the dark and by Hulu There are only murders in the building – all related to murder. “Therefore Black-ish not nominated, but we have been designated as prime suspects in all those white murder shows,” he quipped.
“You know anyone else who hasn’t won an Emmy? Nelson Mandela – I think so,” continued Anderson. He sarcastically added, “At least I’ll always have an Oscar for Kangaroo Jack. They could never take that away from me.”
Black-ish certainly not alone in feeling despised by Emmy voters this year. Among the notable shows that will be closed is Paramount Network’s YellowstoneFX on Hulu’s Booking dogApple TV+’s WeCrashed and HBO Max’s And just like that.
Created by Kenya Barris, Black-ish earned 26 Emmy Award nominations over its course, with the only win coming to contemporary hairstyling in 2020. The series racked up six nominations in 2021, including a nomination for Anderson with comedian role, Tracee Ellis Ross as the lead comedian and the show itself is the best comedy series.
