Applying Math in Gymnastics Can Improve Your Workout

. It works for everyone, from elite athletes preparing for the Olympics to regular weekend athletes to patients looking to improve their fitness.

There are many tools available to help coaches and athletes plan interval training sessions, but none of them are ideal for combining all the elements: the nature of the exercise. , number, duration and intensity of low and high intensity intervals, number of sets.

Guy Thibault, an exercise physiologist and adjunct professor at the School of Zoological Sciences and Physical Activity (EKSAP) at the University of Montreal, wanted to do something about it.

New user-friendly template

Current interval training applications use mathematical models or algorithms designed to balance the difficulty of each session and provide progress, but even the most popular applications can generate sessions are not physically feasible.

Trending models sometimes prescribe sessions where exercisers have to do their first burst of activity at a higher intensity than their record, which doesn’t make any sense.

Thibault is working to develop a more robust and user-friendly model where the difficulty level can be controlled at all times, based on the needs of the practitioner.

To do that, he teamed up with Jonathan Tremblay, a physiologist and professor at EKSAP, and Jérémy Briand, a master’s student in exercise physiology at UdeM, and data scientist at UdeM. INS, and Canadian triathlon champion.

Together, they designed a rotating cubic graphic model that incorporated all the parameters of an interval training session. The final algorithm will give the user full control over the difficulty level; No session is too easy or too difficult.

One app for everyone

While Thibault and his team’s app may seem complicated, it’s not meant for beginners. Anyone can use it when it’s released, currently scheduled for early 2023.

This app will be designed with high level athletes and their coaches in mind, but it will be very easy to use. It is not necessary to have a scientific background or understanding of mathematics to appreciate its features.
