Arsenal approached Chelsea for the transfer of 31-year-old stars: Report
Arsenal are said to have approached Chelsea about signing Jorginho. The Gunners have failed so far in their pursuit of Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Mikel Arteta’s side have been in contact with the Blues about 31-year-old Jorginho. He is an option if Brighton continue to reject Arsenal’s offer for 22-year-old Caicedo.
The Stamford Bridge giants are ready to allow the Italian midfielder to leave. However, they want a reasonable fee for the player with only six months left on his contract.
weapon were eager to sign Caicedo but have seen a £70m offer for the player rejected. The Seagulls are adamant that he will not be leaving Amex Stadium this month, according to Sky Sports News. However, Caicedo has left a transfer request on his Instagram account, asking Brighton to allow him to make a dream move.
The Gunners are looking to bolster their midfield options as they chase their first Premier League title since 2004. The January transfer window closes tomorrow (January 31), so Arteta would love to add midfielders ahead of time. Jorginho will come to Emirates Stadium with rich experience.
The Italian player has made 213 appearances for Chelsea, scored 29 goals and had 9 assists. He won the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League during his time at Stamford Bridge.
However, Graham Potter’s side are also looking for a new midfielder and have kept an eye on Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez. They reported making a bid 105 million pounds for the Argentinian midfielder.
Jorginho has endured an injury-ridden campaign, scoring three goals in 25 games in all competitions. The Italian has been in the Premier League since 2018, when he joined Chelsea from Napoli.
Jorginho admits he almost left Chelsea for Arsenal in 2020
This is not the first time Arsenal have been interested in signing Jorginho as they did in 2020. A move that never happened, instead, the Gunners signed Thomas. Partey of Atletico Madrid.
However, the Italian admitted at the time that he was open to negotiations but he decided to stay at Chelsea. He told ESPN Brazil:
“I believe every player is ready to negotiate. So I believe there is something they talk about. And in the end it was decided that I would stay here.”
He added:
“Now my mind is here and we’re going to do a great job with Chelsea, which I’ve always wanted to do.”
Jorginho lifted the Champions League next season with the Blues, won the UEFA European Championship with Italy and finished third in the standings for the 2021 Ballon d’Or.
