Artificial intelligence can improve colorectal cancer recurrence prediction

Rish Pai, MD, Ph.D., a pathologist at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and senior author, has developed QuantCRC, a deep learning segmentation algorithm, to identify different regions in a volume u using nearly 6,500 digital slide images.

Fifteen parameters were recorded from each colorectal cancer image and compared with findings in pathology reports and health records. Then, a prognostic model using QuantCRC was developed to predict recurrence-free survival.

Artificial intelligence and colon cancer

The investigators used biological samples of colorectal cancer from Colon Cancer Family Registry participating sites in Australia, Canada and the United States, including the Mayo Clinic, to form the study group. internally created. They validated the results with a cohort outside of sites that did not participate in the Colon Cancer Family Registry in Canada and the United States.

“QuantCRC is able to identify different regions within the tumor and extract quantitative data from these regions,” said Dr. “The algorithm converts an image into a set of numbers unique to that tumor. The large number of tumors that we analyzed allowed us to learn features that most accurately predicted the behavior of the tumor. We can now apply what we’ve learned to new colon cancer to predict how the tumor will behave.”

It can also help identify patients at high risk of recurrence who may benefit from more intensive treatment or monitoring.

Dr Pai said he hopes the study will be of value to colon cancer patients, pathologists looking at colon cancer samples and oncologists treating them. colon cancer.

“For patients with colon cancer, the algorithm provides oncologists with another tool to help guide therapy and follow-up,” said Dr. The team of researchers from Australia, Canada and the United States concluded that QuantCRC provides a powerful addition to the routine pathology reporting of colorectal cancer. A prognostic model using QuantCRC could improve the prediction of recurrence-free survival. As the next step in his research, Dr Pai said he plans to use QuantCRC to better understand the tumor’s recurrence mechanism and see if it can predict response to certain treatments. , as immunotherapy or not.
