At least 3 Palestinians were killed and 19 injured in clashes with Israeli forces in the city Nablus in the occupied West BankPalestinian officials said.
Violence broke out early Tuesday morning after a large number of Israeli forces entered the town of Nablus and were spotted by Palestinian security forces and armed militants, according to a spokesman for the Palestinian Fatah movement.
“Three people died and 19 were injured, three of them seriously injured by Israeli fire in Nablus,” the Palestinian Health Ministry said in a brief statement. Palestinian health and security officials said one of the dead was unarmed.
The Israeli army just said that forces operating in Nablus but did not give more details.
“Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is establishing ‘urgent contacts to prevent aggression against our people’ in Nablus,” his spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh said.
“All of this will have dangerous and destructive consequences,” Abu Rudeineh told Palestine TV.
Armed confrontations are continuing in and around the Old City of Nablus in the occupied North West Bank, says Nida Ibrahim of Al Jazeera, reports from Ramallah.
“We are hearing local sources call this a ‘scene from hell’. Mr. Ibrahim said. Nablus has been surrounded by Israeli forces for more than two weeks, she added.
“We’ve seen Israeli forces shut down the city because they said they were interested in tracking a group calling itself the Lions ‘Den,” said Ibrahim. a shooting attack that killed an Israeli soldier.
Ibrahim said the reported number of casualties is expected to rise as the clashes unfold.
On Sunday, the armed group Lions’ Den said that one of its fighters, Tamer al-Kilani, was killed when an explosive device mounted on a motorcycle exploded in the Old City of Nablus.
The group described al-Kilani as one of the “fierce fighters” and blamed Israel for the explosion that killed him as he passed.
The Israeli military declined to comment on claims that it was behind the killing.
Israeli forces have been conducting nightly raids in the occupied West Bank since March in what they say is an attempt to destroy armed network and prevent attacks.
