Athletes’ reaction to the jury’s verdict of not guilty by Kyle Rittenhouse

Kyle Rittenhouse is found not guilty.

A grand jury in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Friday found Rittenhouse not guilty of murder and other charges.

On August 25, 2020, Rittenhouse shot four men, killing two and wounding a third, with a semi-automatic rifle. Rittenhouse in downtown Kenosha to protect a car dealership during the unrest following the police shooting death of Jacob Blake.

Blake, a black man, was shot multiple times by Rusten Sheskey, a white police officer, in Kenosha, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Sheskey was ultimately not charged by state or federal prosecutors.

Rittenhouse, then a 17-year-old from Antioch, Ill., joined a group of other armed men in downtown Kenosha. He shot Joseph Rosenbaum, Anthony Huber and Gaige Grosskreutz, the latter of whom survived. Rittenhouse turned himself in to the police in Antioch on August 26, and was extradited to Kenosha, where he was charged with the following:

  • First degree reckless murder using dangerous weapons
  • The first degree recklessly endangers safety, uses dangerous weapons
  • Intentional first-degree murder, using dangerous weapons
  • Intentional first-degree murder, using dangerous weapons
  • The first degree recklessly endangers safety, uses dangerous weapons
  • Person under the age of 18 in possession of a dangerous weapon (later dismissed)
  • Failure to comply with emergency orders from state or local authorities (later fired)

Most of the incident was captured on video, and the trial that followed became heavily polarized. Prosecutors in the case allege that Rittenhouse provoked the protesters before shooting at them, while defense argued that Rittenhouse acted in self-defence.

The Milwaukee Bucks are scheduled to play at home tonight at 8pm ET/7pm CT. The Bucks, which play 40 miles from Kenosha, were the first NBA team to boycott after the summer 2020 protests.

After the verdict in the case attracted national attention, the sports world reacted to the news that Rittenhouse was found not guilty.
