Atlantic hurricane: More rain, wind forecast for Port aux Basques

BARRIE – The mayor of Port aux Basques, NL, said repair work on parts of a key highway in the community is progressing amid heavy rain and severe winds.

The town has been cut off completely from the rest of the province after torrential downpours last week caused part of the Trans-Canada Highway to either wash away or collapse.

Brian Button, the mayor of Port aux Basques, told CTV News Channel that the waste drifting along the highway was “huge”.

“I mean, it was huge,” he said. “I took the opportunity to visit the site to see the site closest to our community [and it] It was hard to believe that a small stream I had seen there could be so devastating. “

Button said the town used helicopters to transport people to and from Port aux Basques for medical or work reasons.

When it comes to supplies, Button said Marine Atlantic has been able to take the ferry to town to deliver groceries.

“Some people move [by ferry] ,” he explained.

Overall, Button said the town is “managing”.

“There are definitely some hiccups along the way,” he said, adding that both helicopter and ferry services are weather dependent.

In one tweet On Sunday, the province’s transport and infrastructure department said repairs were made on the Trans-Canada Highway in southwestern Newfoundland to allow traffic on Monday in two of the four areas. damaged.

“Repairs are also underway as planned near the weighbridges outside Port aux Basques and near Little Paradise Park,” the tweet read.

Officials said they expect areas near the scales and at Little Paradise Park to reopen midweek.

Button called the developments “good news,” but the town is facing more severe weather because of “significant” rainfall, along with strong winds that have been forecast for the area.

“I hope that some of this work can be completed so we can reinforce the efforts they are trying to make before we have to deal with the severe weather forecast for us. ,” he said.

Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning just before 4 p.m. ET for Channel-Port aux Basques and the surrounding area.

According to the weather agency, 50 to 70 mm of rain – which will be heavy at times – is expected from Monday evening to Tuesday morning.

Furthermore, a dilapidated wind warning is also in effect for the area.

Button said Newfoundland and Labrador residents are “a resilient bunch” and will endure the latest fury of extreme weather.

“I think we’re going to get through this and weather the storm,” he said. “We just have to hope that the weather is coming – it won’t cause further damage, which will inevitably put us in a situation where we’re still looking for the services we’re getting right now.” now.”
