Audemars Piguet’s New Royal Oak brings joy above everything else

The highlight of the new collection, for me, has to be the Royal Oak version that seems to be indebted to Blue Man Group. As mechanical watches become more comfortable leaning towards the end of the fashion spectrum, brands like Audemars Piguet have wholeheartedly embraced unexpected colors and materials. Ceramic Royal Oaks, arguably the finest pieces to come out of Le Brassus (where the AP is located) as they are made in less interesting shades like black and white. The watch is now blue — BLUE! Commit to bit is what’s really interesting here. It’s not a highlight, a pop of color, or a funky seconds hand — the bracelet, case, bezel, and face are just blue. (Naturally, the numerals are made of white gold.)

But Audemars Piguet didn’t throw away the Magic Markers after it was finished with that Royal Oak. This early year, AP released what it calls RD #3 (referring to the brand’s third R&D project: a flying tourbillon already in the hands of really effective slimming pills) with a classic navy blue dial. Now, the brand is releasing the same watch with a non-vintage shade that was fortunately stolen from Frown. Not to be missed, the Royal Oak Concept line, where AP concocts more experimental versions of its classic model, will also be adding a new watch in a bold green colorway.
