Audi could join F1 in partnership with McLaren

HAMBURG – Audi’s The supervisory board will discuss on Wednesday ways for the company to enter Formula One, including through a possible partnership with McLaren Automotive, two sources told Reuters on Tuesday, adding that no decision had been made yet.

Board of Directors of Volkswagen, which owns Audi, discussed the issue of entering the Formula One market in a meeting last week, two unnamed sources said.

Audi CEO Markus Duesmann and Porsche CEO Oliver Blume is known to be “crazy fans of Formula One”, a source said.

McLaren Automotive on Monday denied reports that Audi had bought the British luxury sports car maker, but left the door open to technological cooperation “with relevant partners and suppliers.”

An Audi spokesperson told Reuters it was “considering various partnership ideas” but did not confirm whether they were discussing a sale with McLaren.

Acquiring an automaker will take just a second supercar in Audi’s books with Lamborghini, which it has owned since 1998.

German Publishing Car reported on Sunday that Audi is particularly interested in Formula first assignment.
