Australia: The girl was bitten to death by a shark
PERTH, Australia –
A teenage girl has been killed in a suspected shark attack in Perth, Western Australia, after she jumped off a jet ski, police said on Saturday.
The 16-year-old boy was pulled from the Swan River with serious injuries. Paramedics gave her medical assistance at the scene but she died, Acting Police Inspector Paul Robinson said.
He said the victim was traveling with friends on jet skis. “There may have been a school of dolphins seen nearby and the female jumped into the water to swim near the dolphins.
“Family was not there when this happened, however, her friends were there and as you can imagine this was an extremely traumatic incident for anyone who witnessed it. we are clearly providing counseling services to anyone who witnessed or was affected by the incident,” he said.
He said the Fisheries Department had advised him that it was unusual for a shark to be so far away from the river that flows through Perth into the Indian Ocean.
“I’ve talked to the fisheries and the Coast Guard and unfortunately we don’t know what kind of shark it is,” Robinson said.
