Australian Open: Canada’s Shapovalov advances
MELBOURNE, Australia –
Denis Shapovalov of Canada has reached the third round of the Australian Open.
Shapovalov, from Richmond Hill, Ont., beat Kwon Soon-woo of South Korea 7-6 (6), 6-7 (3), 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-2 on Wednesday.
He will face 23rd seed Reilly Opelka of the United States on Friday.
Shapovalov beats Soon-woo as the Korean lands a high and wide backhand return.
The tug-of-war lasted for nearly four and a half hours.
Shapovalov has 29 aces against Soon-woo’s three in the win.
