INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department released more information Friday about the death of a man who died in police custody.

Herman Whitfield III passed away on Monday After an IMPD officer used the Taser twice to try to subdue him, police said.

Police initially said he was shot in the chest. The IMPD said Friday that the autopsy results did not show Whitfield was hit in the chest, but rather, he was hit on the left side of his abdomen.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office has not provided a cause of death.

The IMPD said the following officers are under investigation and have been placed on administrative leave:

  • Patrol Officer Steven Sanchez
  • Patrol Officer Adam Ahmad
  • Patrol Officer Matthew Virt
  • Patrol Officer (FTO) Dominique Clark
  • Patrol Officer (FTO) Jordan Bull
  • Recruiting Intern Nicholas Mathew

Officers will remain on administrative leave until they have completed the necessary assessments and the preliminary review of the administrative and criminal investigations is complete.

Investigators said video from the officers’ body cameras will be released in the coming weeks.

Once the criminal investigation is complete, the civilian Majority Force Utilization Review Board will review the investigations and make a recommendation to the sheriff as to whether the officer’s actions were consistent with the police’s policy. ministry and training or not.
