The Bahamas Meteorological Department said there was a report of a high tide nearly 1.2 meters (4 feet) north of the town of Treasure Cay in Abaco.

Video taken by residents of Abaco shows courtyards of some houses submerged in water, although the buildings themselves were not flooded.

“We are asking everyone to please take it [seriously],” said Andrea Newbold from the Bahamas Disaster Management Unit for Social Services. “Don’t wait until the last minute.”

In Florida, residents in at least three counties — Flagler, Palm Beach and Volusia — were ordered to evacuate barrier islands, low-lying areas and mobile homes. The evacuation order went into effect Wednesday morning.

Before the storm, Palm Beach International Airport was closed Wednesday morning, and Daytona Beach International Airport plans to shut down later in the day.

Orlando International Airport, the seventh busiest airport in the United States, is set to close at 4 p.m. local time (21 GMT). Further south, officials say Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Miami International Airport are experiencing a number of flight delays and cancellations but both plan to remain open.

New warnings and watches have been issued for many parts of Florida, including the Southwest Gulf Coast devastated by Hurricane IanCategory 4 hurricane hit on September 28.

The storm destroyed homes and damaged crops, including orange groves, across the state.

Ian hit much of central Florida with heavy rainfall, causing flooding that many residents were still dealing with as Nicole approached.

Nicole is forecast to move to southern Georgia on Thursday before moving to the Carolinas on Friday.
