Eight teenage girls facing second-degree murder charges in the death of a homeless man in Toronto will appear for bail hearings in the new year.
Toronto police say three 13-year-olds, three 14-year-olds and two 16-year-olds allegedly entered and stabbed a 59-year-old man downtown in mid-December and then he died in hospital. .
The defendant’s identity cannot be released under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
During Thursday’s brief trial, an attorney for one of the girls asked Crown’s attorney to release a video of the alleged assault posted on the popular online video platform TikTok.
A judge said some of the teenagers are still in the process of hiring a lawyer, which is why the case needs to be adjourned.
The teens are scheduled to appear for a bail hearing in juvenile court on January 5, 2023.
Police said they believe the teenagers gathered after meeting on social media and came from homes across the Greater Toronto Area.
