Banaras Hindu University conducts research on economical anti-diabetic drugs

Nazar Hussain, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicinal Chemistry, Faculty of Ayurveda, Institute of Health Sciences, BHU, contributed to the highly coveted project of the Engineering and Scientific Research Board, a statutory body of Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, on C-glycoside synthesis.

Hussain said C-glycosides are derivatives of carbohydrates that are widely used in the treatment of diabetes.

He will get an allowance more than Rs. 40 lakh for his research in this project. Under this project, he will conduct research on anti-diabetic drugs through new routes in a cost-effective manner.

Along with the synthesis of antidiabetic drugs, the project also aims to synthesize some polyphenolic C-glycosides. Polyphenolic compounds are known in the treatment of various viral infections.

This study will also explore the possibility of combining polyphenols with carbohydrates to examine their antiviral activities against various viral infections, including Covid-19. This will be one of the major studies of its kind in the country.

For BHU, it is a pride that the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy has been assigned a project of such importance and significance.
