Barricade suspect found dead in Guilford, hostages rescued

GUILFORD, CT (WFSB) – An orderly shelter in Guilford was lifted Thursday morning following a situation where a suspect was fenced in.

Police said they had been trying to get a man out of the home he had barricaded in front of a family member since Wednesday afternoon.

However, he was found dead from what is believed to be a self-immolation wound in his home when officials arrived to rescue the occupants on Thursday morning.

Guilford Police held a press conference at around 9am on Thursday to talk about the deadlock situation in the town.

His identity has yet to be revealed.

“The scene on Fitch Hill Road is safe,” police said in an update. “Law enforcement officers remain at the scene for an ongoing investigation. The shelter-in-place requirement has now been lifted. ”

The female hostage has been rescued, police confirmed.

Blocked lines are in effect since the incident started on Wednesday was still strongly enforced on the previous Thursday morning.

The crew of Channel 3 are people from Great Hill Road.

The incident began with a 911 call around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to a fire on 80th Street.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, a man was standing in the yard with two long guns, police said. Firefighters were forced to back off.

The suspect fled in a vehicle to another home on Fitch Hill Road. Police revealed the house belonged to a family member.

“We received a phone call from inside the home from a family member who said he was there and that he was armed,” said Lieutenant Alex Geonnone, commanding officer, Connecticut State Police Central District said.

Police said the house is believed to have caught on fire and the home the man fenced in is owned by his family.

SWAT and crisis negotiators had hoped to end the situation without anyone being injured. They last about 18 hours. No shots were fired.

“At some point, while we were on the scene, members of the state police team heard a woman in the house screaming in distress,” Geonnone said. “At that point, members of the SWAT team decided to conduct a hostage rescue operation.”

Officers went inside and found the man dead on the second floor.

The woman got out safely.

“We believe this leads to the best possible outcome,” Geonnone said.

Police said the man was a Guilford resident.

They cited interagency collaboration to help end the situation.

“For a small town like Guilford, our regional and state police partners are so important to the work we do when cases like this happen because we are a department. small,” said Sheriff Butch Hyatt, Guilford Police Department. “And we have access to state and regional assets to access properties that we just can’t have in a small segment.”

Police say they have the area under control, so residents are safe.

Until the following Thursday morning, they told them they should stay indoors.

State and local fire police are investigating the fire on 80th Street.

Fitch Hill and Hemlock Roads have been reopened but only to the public.

Nearby Melissa Jones Elementary School had some shelter on Wednesday, but other than that, schools were open as usual on Thursday morning.

An impasse in Guilford went on for more than half a day.
